FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How often should I have the chairs assessed?

A: According to the “Safety, Health & Welfare at Work Regulations 2007 chairs should be inspected at least once a year. We have found that most of the Pharmaceutical companies have the production chairs assessed every six months and the office chairs every year.

Q. How long does it take to assess a chair?

A: The normal length of time to assess a chair is 2 minutes so disruption is minimal.

Q.  What does it cost?

A. The basic cost for the assessment and the report works out at €3.50 per chair. We normally do a quotation based on the number of chairs because an increased number of chairs will lower the cost.

Q: What do we do with the damaged chairs identified in the report?

A: You really have two options. You can replace them with new chairs, which is an expensive option or the most popular option is to have the damaged components replaced and extend the life of the chair as well as making it safe for use again.

Q: What normally happens when a person has an accident with a chair?

A: We have seen a pattern here. The first thing is to find out the cause of the accident followed by who is responsible. EH&S is normally the first to be contacted as it is their responsibility to see that a safe environment is provided.

Q: Why should I do this, what are the benefits?

A: First and foremost the focus is on employee safety at all times. EHS is there to ensure that standards of safety are in place and maintained for employees. Secondly Ireland is not far behind the US as far as litigation is concerned. So if an employee has an accident and it goes down the legal route, the court will look closely at the responsibilities of the employer to see if they acted in a responsible manner. Accidents happen no matter what precautions are taken but if an employer has a pro-active approach to chair safety and records to prove it, it certainly stands to them.

Q: Who else is getting this done?

A: Most of the pharmaceutical companies in Ireland have enlisted the services of Jacobsen Chair Safety. On top of that we have helped accountancy firms, banking institutions, educational institutes, health authorities and local authorities.
